Do Beagles Shed?

When getting a new dog, many want to know everything possible about their pup before bringing them home. In the case that you are getting a Beagle for the first time, there may be a lot of information you are eager to learn. One such question you may have is, do Beagles shed? Beagles have short hair and are categorized as being dogs of moderate shedding.

Shedding is a more or less a continuous cycle as old hair falls out and new hair grows in. However, new hair does not push out old hair, as one might think. Each hair follicle has its own growth cycle of growing, resting, and falling out.

Seasonal Coat

Beagles, like most dogs, have seasonal coats. You should always expect your Beagle to shed more during the springtime, even if you live in a decently warm climate.

This is because dogs naturally grow a thicker coat during the winter time, even if the temperature does not drop significantly.

A Beagle’s winter coat is influenced more by the light than by temperature.

Dogs’ coats will begin to grow in thicker when there is less daylight.

This is an evolutionary trait but nonetheless is still apparent today.

Two-Layered Coat

Remember, Beagles were bred for hunting hare and rabbit in the English countryside. Anyone who knows England knows rain! So, Beagles have learned to deal with this with a two-layered coat, also called a double coat.

Their undercoat is soft and dense to keep them warm while the outer coat is much more coarse with longer, tightly packed hair that works to be somewhat waterproof. So, even though Beagles do not look like such obvious shedders, such as Golden Retrievers, your eyes might deceive you a little bit. You definitely will want to keep a lint roller handy.

Managing Your Beagle’s Coat

Grooming

Because beagles have dense coats, brushing their coat will tremendously help to reduce their shedding. You can use either a medium bristle brush or a hound glove. A hound glove is a rubber hand mit that has nubs on the palm area which you can use to rub out loose hair and dander.

Your Beagle will always shed because of the way the continuous growth cycle of hair works. But, if you make it a goal to brush out your pup at least once a week, you will notice a tremendous decrease in lose hair on your couch and on your clothes.

When your Beagle is shedding his winter coats during springtime, brushing him 2-3 times a week is ideal to make his shedding more manageable.

Additionally with grooming, usually, Beagles do not require too many dog baths; as they are not especially dirty dogs.

But, Beagles do love exploring and following scents, so they might find their way into something dirty while they are adventuring. A quick rinse with the hose might be all you need.

Nutrition

Of course, nutrition will affect coats on Beagles. Proper nutrition is essential for giving your dog a healthy coat. If your pup is malnourished, he will have weaker, more brittle hair that is prone to fall out more.

Many people only focus on a dog’s main meals for their health and nutrition, often neglecting the effect of treats. Everyone wants to spoil their little pup with treats, but being mindful of not overfeeding and feeding poorly nutritious foods is important. Even an overweight dog can be a malnourished dog if they are not receiving proper nutrients.

So, all in all, Beagles are not heavy shedders, but, if you are thinking about adding a Beagle to your family, you should definitely expect some moderate shedding. But, with regular brushing and proper nutrition, their shedding should be very manageable.
